The points based skilled immigration category the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme, introduced in January 2002, proved to be very successful. However, it has been replaced by Tier 1 (General), part of the UK's new five-tier points based system. From 1 May 2004 nationals of the new EU Countries have been able to work freely in the UK subject only to the requirement in most cases that they apply under the Worker Registration Scheme.
